When we receive Reiki, its healing energy is drawn to the causal level of dis-ease and works to create balance and harmony in accord with our highest good. Many experience a gentle release of emotions, changes in habitual thought patterns, and enhanced circulation, relaxation, and energy as well as clearer thinking.

People from different backgrounds such as nurses, doctors, massage therapists; attorneys, psychotherapists, hospice workers and even priests are finding that Reiki has been able to help them immensely. Many feel that they have become more in touch with their spiritual nature, and report a greater dedication to their own unique religious traditions.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word, which can be translated into English in a number of ways. The most common translation is "Universal Energy", a potentially confusing term when outside a meaningful context. There are many cultures around the world, which have a deep understanding of what western scientists are now calling "subtle energy." This energy is called "subtle" because there are currently no scientific devices, which can accurately measure it. Yet despite this fact, there are many people who can feel, see, and even hear frequencies of energy, which are not readily apparent to most of us.

The Etheric Body

Traditional Reiki positions broadly correspond to seven major energy centers of the body called chakras - wheels of spinning energy described and mapped out thousands of years ago. There are also many smaller centers that move and coordinate subtle energy throughout the body. We know that matter, which appears so solid, is really not solid at all. A piece of wood or a piece of glass are made up of an immense number of electrons in vibration, revolving round a central point known as a proton. Matter consists of atoms and these atoms are in turn composed of electrons and protons which are held together by electro-magnetic forces. Thus matter is built up of minute electric charges, positive and negative, not moving at random, but freely and orderly, connected together by the invisible universal elements called the ether.

The ether is an omnipresent cosmic substance filling all space and is the vehicle or medium by which all physical-etheric forces contact the earth and ourselves.

The vibrations of the ether are many and varied. One form of etheric undulation or wave-motion gives us the phenomenon we call light -- other forms give us heat, color, electricity, ectoplasm, etc.

This marvelous substance is perpetually conveying across empty space the cosmic energy that enables us to live and think.

The ether is never at rest, it is ever in movement -- it cannot be seen or felt by the physical senses, yet if it were non-existent one would be blind and cold as there would be no medium to carry the waves of light and sound, warmth and color. Matter itself is basically etheric. The electrons in the atoms are particles of negative electricity and the protons are considered by science as electric in their motive. Both are etheric and matter is thus only ether in a particular state of vibration.

The ether is the great connecting link between the physical senses and the higher cosmic forces. It is obvious that our physical senses only respond to a very limited range of vibrations, that outside these there is a universe full of life and thought which responds to a higher range of vibrations, unreal to us but more real to it that physical matter. Our ordinary senses -- our range of sight, touch, perception, smell, hearing -- are limited to the last degree. This fact is clearly illustrated by the scientific instrument known as the spectroscope which analyses light into its seven component parts. Our physical eyes perceive only an infinitesimal part of the vibrations of color -- the visible vibrations as compared with the invisible are much less an inch compared to a mile. It is evident that there is a vast region of force and activity beyond our normal sense perceptions. Until we realize that our ordinary senses respond to a very limited range of vibrations and that outside there is a vast universe of life and activity, we cannot hope to unfold and develop our inner perception.

The etheric forces influence physical life in a variety of ways. They are creative and formative, and take on the characteristics of vitality, form, and power. The ether is the transmitter of the essential life-forces, also known as Chi. Furthermore, this cosmic organizing force is susceptible to control by Mind and Will -- mind controls life and life controls matter.

Just as the physical world is surrounded and influenced by the ether, so also is man. The etheric forces are gathered and concentrated in man and form what is called the Etheric Body or double, which surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body and is an exact copy or duplicate of it, organ for organ and cell for cell.

The Etheric, or vital body, as it is also called, extends beyond the periphery of the dense body as the etheric region extends beyond the dense part of the planet.

Brief Description of Chakra’s

The seven major chakras are often pictured like wheels or lotus flowers originating along the spine. These seven main centers start at the base of the spine with only four spokes or petals and move to the crown with a thousand petals. Each of these centers has its own color and sound, as well as powerful attributes, starting from the bottom up, of instinctual knowing, creativity and sensuality, power and action, love and forgiveness, creative self-expression, intuition and cosmic consciousness and enlightenment. Described in recent times, the transpersonal heart (the eighth major chakra) is the center of universal love toward all mankind. Reiki Training, through healing sessions, integrates the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical bodies. Through regular Reiki treatments, we open and purify the chakras and thus revitalize related nerve plexus, glands and organs. It is through the science and art of Reiki, we can begin to open ourselves even more to purpose of universal energy, chi.

Glands: Message Centers of the Body

The hand positions in Reiki also broadly correspond to the major endocrine glands of the body. These regulators, weighing less than a pound, are of utmost importance to our well-being. They are catalysts for chemical reactions that regulate all-important processes in the body: metabolism, aging, growth, stamina, weight, sexuality, moods, and the body's ability to reduce pain and heal itself.

A Reiki session begins at the crown it is here we find the pineal gland and the pituitary gland. The pineal gland, in relation to the amount of light falling upon the body, regulates skin pigmentation and sexual development. The pituitary regulates sleep, growth, and body fluids, and stores mood-enhancing hormones. Treating the pituitary enhances state of mind, heightens the senses of smell and taste and encourages the body to replace aging cells.

Next the practitioner moves to the throat, or the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck, below the larynx (voice box) and just above your clavicles (collarbones). It is shaped like a "bow tie," having two halves (lobes): a right lobe and a left lobe joined by an "isthmus." You can't always feel a normal thyroid gland. This gland regulates the rate at which we burn the food we eat and the rate and intensity at which we live. The thyroid keeps iodine in the body at the correct level, regulates mucous membranes, aids digestion, and builds nerve and brain tissue. Proper working of the thyroid gland keeps us at the right weight for our body type. The parathyroid glands, sitting on the thyroid, regulate the calcium in our body. The right amount of calcium enables us to feel calm and keeps our bones strong, reducing the chance of osteoporosis.

The practitioner now moves on to the upper chest were we will find the thymus gland. The thymus gland lies in the upper part of the mediastinum behind the sternum and extends upwards into the root of the neck. It weighs about 10 to 15 g.(about half an ounce) at birth and begins to grow until the individual reaches puberty when it begins to atrophy. It’s maximum weight is around 30 - 40g (around 1 to 1.5 ounces) by the age of 40 it has returned to it’s weight at birth. The thymus consists of two lobes connected by areolar tissue. The lobes are enclosed in a fibrous capsule which dips into their substance dividing them into lobules that consist of an irregular branching framework of epithelial cells and lymphocytes.

Function

Lymphocytes originate from haemocytoblasts (stem cells) in red bone marrow. Those that enter the thymus mature and develop into activated T-lymphocytes i.e. able to respond to antigens encountered elsewhere in the body. They then divide into two groups :

those that enter the blood, some of which remain in circulation and some lodge in other lymphoid tissue

those that remain in the thymus gland and are the source of future generations of T-lymphocytes. The maturation of the thymus and other lymphoid tissue is stimulated by thymosin, a hormone secreted by the epithelial cells that form the framework of the thymus gland. Involution of the gland begins in adolescence and, with increasing age the effectiveness of T- lymphocyte response to antigens declines.

The liver, a major organ, metabolizes different foods, stores important vitamins and minerals, and detoxifies external and internal poisons from the body. The bile produced by the liver assists in fat digestion and keeps the colon lubricated. The pancreas controls carbohydrate metabolism and produces enzymes that promote good digestion. Throughout the pancreas are scattered the Islets of Langerhans: Known as the insulin-producing tissue, the islets of Langerhans do more than that. They are groups of specialized cells in the pancreas that make and secrete hormones. Named after the German pathologist Paul Langerhans (1847-1888), who discovered them in 1869, these cells sit in groups that Langerhans likened to little islands in the pancreas. There are five types of cells in an islet: alpha cells that make glucagon, which raises the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood; beta cells that make insulin; delta cells that make somatostatin which inhibits the release of numerous other hormones in the body; and PP cells and D1 cells, about which little is known. Degeneration of the insulin-producing beta cells is the main cause of type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus.The spleen boosts our immune system by cleansing the blood of micro-organisms, producing white blood cells, and storing blood for use in emergencies. Hormones from the adrenals provide the base for the digestive enzymes and help the body fight infections, heal inflammations, and reduce pain. Proper functioning of the adrenals stimulates sexuality and creativity. Consistently balancing the adrenals with Reiki treatments provides quick energy, stamina and muscle tone.
